Jeanette Carolyn Matlack was born on March 21, 1928 in a garage just off Beaver Dam Road in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. She was the second child of William Morton, a house painter, and his wife Mary Jones Morton. Two years later, Mary died of post partum complications following the birth of Jeanette's sister Naomi. Jeanette was raised by her Mother's sister Sarah Jones Goff, and her husband William.
Jeanette married Frank Caster Matlack in 1947. Their only child, Mary, was born on August 20, 1952. Jeanette and Frank legally separated six years later, and Jeanette and her daughter returned to the home of William and Sarah Goff. Jeanette looked after her aunt and uncle for the rest of their lives, as she raised her daughter.
A short time after the deaths of William and Sarah Goff, Jeanette relocated to Pennsylvania. She spent most of the remainder of her life in the home of her daughter Mary and Mary's husband, Robert S. Kuss, Jr. Jeanette enjoyed gardening, knitting and crocheting, quilting, and watercolor painting. She was very active at the Hope United Methodist Church on Steel Road in Havertown, just down the block from her home. She sang in the choir, served as president of her Women's Circle, and also as a member of the church board of directors.
Jeanette suffered from a variety of medical conditions throughout her life. She underwent quintuple coronary by-pass surgery in 1994. A few years later she had a stroke. She fought to recover and live as normal a life as possible, but eventually it became impossible for her to remain with her daughter and son-in-law. She spent the last four years of her life as a resident at Broomall Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on Malin Road in Broomall, PA. She received excellent care there, and enjoyed participating in the many social activities offered at the facility.
Unfortunately her condition gradually deteriorated, and after a brief hospital stay Jeanette died on July 16, 2013 due to complications following a minor surgical procedure. Her daughter was with her as she peacefully passed away. No funeral services are planned. Memorial donations may be made to Hope United Methodist Church, 1108 Steel Road, Havertown, PA 19083.
