Joan Diane Menig Habres was born and raised in Philadelphia and she lived with her mom and dad, Harry and Anne Menig, her sister, Evelyn (Menig) Brennan. She worked as a bank teller at a local branch in Philadelphia until she married Joseph Walter “Joe” Habres. She met Joe while sitting on the steps in Wildwood, NJ and they married shortly afterwards. Joe and Joan moved to 454 Westmont Drive, Collingdale, PA after the birth of their first son, Joseph Paul “Joe” Habres. They had two more children, Joan Menig (Habres) Lafferty and Jack Habres. Her family was known as the five “J’s” in the neighborhood. Joan was a stay at home mom and she was very involved in her children’s lives. She would take the children to the community pool all summer long and she LOVED to read books. You never saw her without a book in her hand and she would walk 2 miles to the trolley stop so she could go to the library and take out more books up until the ripe old age of 89. She lived independently until the age of 91 when she sold her home and moved in with her daughter until her passing.
She is survived by 5 grandchildren, Dorothy (Habres) Harding, Joanna Habres, Bridget (Lafferty) Norris, Katie (Lafferty) Kessler, and Dennis Lafferty, and 6 great-grandchildren, Jonathon Harding, Brianna Harding, Nathan Harding, Joseph Habres, Julian Habres, and Haleana Strong.
