Joan Mangan

Joan A. Mangan (nee Smith), age 85, of West Chester, PA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on March 3, 2020.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Rose (nee Dooner) Smith. Joan was the youngest of five children. She attended Good Shepherd, where she met her lifelong friends. She went to West Catholic Girls’ High School and graduated in 1952.

Joan met her beloved husband Jack in 1953. They fell in love, wrote daily letters to each other while Jack was in the service, and were married in 1956. They raised their six children in Saint Bernadette parish in Drexel Hill, where she was an active member. She loved her children and was always their biggest advocate. She was a proud grandmother of her 16 grandchildren and great-granddaughter. She never missed a celebration or a graduation, even watching some online.

Joan and Jack moved to West Chester, where she became a member of SS. Simon and Jude parish.

Joan loved spending her summers in Ocean City, New Jersey. In recent years, she especially loved sitting on the pool deck with her friends from the Gardens Plaza.

Joan is survived by her husband of 64 years John J. Mangan; her children Jack (Gabrielle), Joanmarie Price (Joseph), Michael (Lynn), Patricia, Kevin (Sheila) and Matthew (Michele); her grandchildren John, Meghan (Michael), Mary, Brendan, Joey, Patrick, Julia, Jack, Tim, Colleen, Allison, Daniel, Mary Rose, Sean, Clare, and Siobhan; her great-granddaughter Isabelle; and many adoring nieces and nephews. Joan was predeceased by her siblings, Rosemary Smith, Joseph Smith, Dorothy Bohs, and Richard Smith.

Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation Sunday, March 8, 2020, 3:00 – 5:00 PM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073, 610-353-6300, and on Monday to her Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM at SS. Simon and Jude Church, 8 Cavanaugh Court, West Chester, PA 19380. Interment SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
