John M. Cunningham

John M. Cunningham, age 65, of Havertown, PA, passed away on July 12, 2023. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Bernard and Virginia Lee Cunningham (nee Ferguson).

Described as larger than life, John was a force for good in the lives of everyone he met. His most treasured relationships were with his wife Anita, who was his devoted partner for more than 35 years, and his sons. He was most happy and proud when he was supporting them in their passions and talents in both music and hockey, sharing in every milestone with them and cheering every triumph. But his heart was so big, he seemed to have endless love and energy (and jokes) for everyone—always ready to help his siblings, big extended family and his many longtime friends (who were also like family). 

John long served the Upper Darby community for more than 40 years, including as an EMS tech, motorcycle policeman, and juvenile detective. He was a dedicated mentor to young people and served for years as the Bonner wrestling coach. 

John was also an avid fisherman and loved spending time with family and friends (and Daisy) at the shore, listening to the ocean and watching the waves. He was patient and kind, well-read, interested and interesting. He had a great sense of adventure and used his booming voice to share both thoughtful advice and funny stories. He was so good to us all and will be celebrated all our lives. 

John was the beloved husband of Anita Cunningham (nee Madden); loving father of John Cunningham, Jr., Kevin Cunningham, Patrick Cunningham, and the late Brian Cunningham; caring brother of Patricia Hodge (Willard), Kevin Wallace, and the late Michele Hummel (Michael). Also survived by his loving nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing 6:00-8:00 PM on Monday, July 17, 2023 and 8:30-9:30 on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at The Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, PA 19082, followed by his Funeral Mass 10:00 AM at St. Pius X Church, 220 Lawrence Road, Broomall, PA 19008. Interment Private.
