JOHN F. CURRIE - Engineer, Marine, Family Man
John F. Currie, of Newtown Square, died suddenly on February 5, 2014. He was 84 and had been married to Jeanne (Conlin) for 60 years. He is survived by his children Mary (Barney) Gallagher, John, Dan (Mary), Martin, David (Norita), Anne (Sean) McMahon, Andrew (Bernadette) and Jeanne (Tom) Shellenberger. He is also survived by his 18 grandchildren, his sister Mary Therese Currie, S.H.C.J. of Bryn Mawr and a younger brother, Rev. William J. Currie, S.J. of Tokyo, Japan.
John graduated from St. Joseph's Prep and Villanova University School of Engineering. He served for 2 years in the Marines during the Korean War. His main work for almost 30 years was at Energy Elevator Company,. founded by his grandfather. After it closed, he used his engineering skills in two other companies.
A long-time resident of Drexel Hill, John made many friends through his activities in St. Andrew's Parish and in sports like Little League, tennis and swimming. Over and above all his activities, however, family held first place. He nurtured and challenged his children, proud when everyone graduated from college. He doted on his grandchildren, singing them to sleep as infants, and later giving each an individualized tool box to encourage their creativity. Every family dinner began with the members naming a "thankful". John often thanked God for Jeanne who, he said, was the wind for his sails helping him fly through their many ups and downs.
Even after he retired in 2000, he pursued many interests such as working on the detailed family tree, auditing courses at Villanova University, volunteering as a reading tutor and a helper with Habitat for Humanity. An avid reader and a would-be author, John kept a journal which reveals his deep faith. As he approached his 80s, he wrote: "I've been talking to God about how happy a life I've had. However, if He wants me to join Him then I'll be happy to do so

on his terms." God's terms turned out to be kind ones as John's death was sudden, sparing him a lengthy incapacity.
