John D. "Jack" Donnelly, age 86, of Springfield, PA, passed away on February 21, 2019. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Francis and Elizabeth Donnelly (nee Schlogel). In 1951 Jack joined the United States Marine Corps at which time he achieved the rank of sergeant and was assigned to the Easy Company Second battalion Third Marines division Fmf. He also participated in the testing of a nuclear bomb, in the Nevada desert, during his service. The name of the test was called "the upshot knot whole badger". After his Marine Corps service ended, in 1954, he started his career as a wood, wire and metal lather, in 1955, where he also achieved the status as business agent and financial secretary for the union, working until his retirement in 1990. Jack had a great sense of humor. He really loved to read and always knew interesting facts about almost anything, contributing to his love for doing crossword puzzles daily. Jack is predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Elizabeth "Marie" Donnelly (nee Gallagher) and his brother, Francis Donnelly. He is survived by his loving children John D. Donnelly, Jr. (Donna), Thomas F. Donnelly, Maryanne E. Lawler (Les), Stephen J. Donnelly, Elaine Saunders (Dan), Matthew J. Donnelly (Karen), and Mark C. Donnelly. He is also survived by his brothers Richard Donnelly and Robert Donnelly, 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing 9:30-10:45 AM on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at St. Francis of Assisi, 136 Saxer Avenue, Springfield, PA 19064, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Interment SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery.
