John Gibbons

September 1, 1938 — January 28, 2016

John J. (Jack) Gibbons of West Chester, Chairman & CEO of Tseng Labs, a graphics chip maker that was once ranked the fastest growing tech company in Philadelphia, has died of heart failure at the age of 77.

Jack was born in 1938 in Philadelphia, and grew up in Wayne, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Malvern Preparatory High School in 1956, he attended St. Joseph's University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Accounting in 1961. He went on to earn his CPA, and started his career as an accountant and senior audit manager for Arthur Andersen & Co. From there he became a vice president at Industrial Valley Bank before starting his own mergers and acquisitions company in 1978. In 1983 he co-founded Tseng Labs, a Philadelphia-based tech company that designed and manufactured cutting edge VGA graphics chips for PC's. He was instrumental in building the company from a fledgling start-up to a highly profitable tech leader whose clients included Dell, Compaq, IBM, NEC, and Siemens. Tseng's graphic chips dominated the PC market in the late 80's and early 90's, and earned them a number one ranking in the Inquirer's "Philly Top 100 Companies" in 1988. Tseng Labs was also recognized nationally as number one on "Investor's Daily's" list of U.S. computer companies, and won Financial World's top 200 growth companies in 1992. After retiring from Tseng in 1998 he went on to become a director at Philadelphia-based Cell Pathways Inc., a NASDAQ bio-pharmaceuticals company that developed drugs for cancer treatment.

Jack was the president of the Delaware County Chapter of the National Association of Accountants and a member of AICPA and PICPA for almost 50 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Marco Island, Florida and a United States Veteran.

Jack was a long-time Phillies season ticket holder and Philadelphia sports fan. He enjoyed boating, golf, and playing cards. He was a winter resident of Marco Island, Florida. The biggest joy in his life was spending time with his 3 children and 13 grandchildren. He was a devoted father and grandfather, and could often be found attending one if his grandkids sporting events.
