John Martin

John E. Martin, 66, of West Chester, PA, formerly of Havertown, PA passed away on March 10, 2014.



Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1947, John was the beloved son of the late Edward M. Martin and Clara Mae (Row) Martin Baer (the late Carlton H. Baer).



John was the beloved husband of Anne E. "Nancy" (McArdle) Martin; loving father of Eileen M. Dunigan (Michael), John E. (Miriam) and Jeffrey T. (Samantha M.); loving grandfather (Grandpa/Pappy) of Claryssa, Conor, Luke and Kole; dear brother of Jane Epstein (William), James Martin (Joan) and the late Jerry Martin. He is also survived by his extended family, Thomas McArdle Sr., father-in-law (the late Rosemary), brothers-in-law Thomas McArdle Jr (Mary), Michael McArdle Sr (Judy), John (Jack) McArdle, Joseph McArdle, James McArdle, Daniel McArdle (Sue) and sister-in-law Maureen Madden (Gene) as well as many nieces and nephews.



John served honorably as a UH - 60 helicopter pilot in the US Army during the Vietnam War from 1966-1972. He was highly decorated for his service, being the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.



He worked in the restaurant industry for many years until opening his own business, AAA Clean Gear, in West Chester, PA. Most recently he was an employee of the PA Liquor Control Board.



John enjoyed motorcycle riding, working on classic cars and watching sports, including football and ice hockey, especially those games in which his sons played. He loved walking the beach with Nancy, sailing and spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.



Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation 10:00-11:00 AM Friday, March 14, 2014 at SS Simon & Jude Church, 8 Cavanaugh Ct, West Chester, PA 19382 followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Interment private.



In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to the Veterans Helping Veterans organization through the Downingtown VFW Post 845, 4601 West Lincoln Highway, Downingtown, PA 19335.
