John H. Richards III, 71, of Bryn Mawr, PA, a Philadelphia businessman and sportsman, passed away peacefully at Bryn Mawr Hospital on Monday, April 21, 2014.
During 44 years at his family's chemical company, RichardsApex Inc., Mr. Richards oversaw the expansion of the company's metalworking chemical business from its Philadelphia headquarters to include manufacturing in Morgantown, PA in 1992; a merger with G. Whitfield Richards Co. in 1997; as well as international representation in the Pacific Rim with the foundation of RichardsApex AustralAsia, based outside Sydney, Australia in 2002.
Mr. Richards worked alongside family members George "Dick" Richards III, cousins David and Drew Richards, as well as his own sons, John H. Richards IV and Bradley N. Richards for many years. He retired in 2009.
Mr. Richards grew up in Villanova, attended the Haverford School and received his degree in Chemical Engineering from Bucknell University in 1966.
An avid sportsman, Mr. Richards was an accomplished equestrian, fly fisherman and beagler. Mr. Richards was a member of the Rose Tree Foxhunt, Broadacers Anglers Club and the Ardrossan Beagles, where he served as Joint Master. Mr. Richards was passionate about conservation of land, preservation of open spaces and the humane and loving treatment of animals, especially training young beagle puppies.
He is survived by his wife, Susan, sons Brad, John IV and his wife Kim, his grandchildren Julia, Jake and Griffin, his sister Patricia Richards Parker and his brother-in-law, Robert MacCallum.
A Memorial Service will be held at Saint David's Episcopal Church, 763 S. Valley Forge Road, Wayne, PA on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 1:00 PM where friends may call after 12:30 PM. Interment is private.
