John Howard Shelsy passed away peacefully on February 9, 2025 at the age of 89. Born in North Adams, MA, he was the beloved son of the late Nicholas and Lillian (nee Goodermote) Shelsy.
John is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Catherine "Kit" D. (nee Dansereau) Shelsy; children Catherine S. Collins (F. Scott) and John F. Shelsy (Kim); and grandchildren Amanda, Allison and William Collins, Cortlyn and Reese Shelsy. He is also survived by his sisters, Phyllis Fear (late Dyck) and Evelyn Janas (Jean Pierre).
John proudly served in the United States Army Security Agency during the Korean War. He graduated from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, where he earned "Golden Hawk" status for being a 50+ year alumni. He embarked on a long and successful career in Human Resources Management, working with several companies throughout the Delaware Valley. After retiring, John volunteered at the Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum, and was an active member in the December 7th, 1941 Pearl Harbor Remembrance Association.
A lifelong baseball enthusiast, John’s knowledge of the game was unmatched—his passion for baseball, its stats, rules, and records, was extraordinary. He played in numerous baseball and softball leagues throughout his life, including a local senior league into his late 70s. In his final years, his greatest joy was spending time with his cherished grandchildren, especially when it meant watching and cheering them on from the sidelines.
Relatives and friends are invited to John’s viewing on Saturday, February 15, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 35 Old Eagle School Road, Wayne, PA followed by his funeral mass at 11:00 AM. Interment at Calvary Cemetery, 235 Matsonford Road, Conshohocken, PA. Luncheon immediately following to be announced. John's favorite color was red, and we invite attendees to celebrate his vibrant life by wearing something red at his services.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in John’s name to Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum, 301 Iven Avenue, Wayne, PA 19087, would be greatly appreciated.
