Jonathan Beasley

February 11, 1950 — June 9, 2017

Jonathan Odum Beasley, age 67, of Lansdowne, PA, passed away on June 9, 2017. Born in Rayville, LA, he was the son of the late Dr. Leon O. and Marjorie Beasley (nee Wood).



Jon is survived by his wife Susan, of Lansdowne, PA, his stepson, Dylan Parks and his wife, Elizabeth of NYC, brother, Dr. Stephen Beasley and his wife Patsy, of Baton Rouge, LA, sister, Elizabeth Frederick and her husband Ron, of Pflugerville, TX and his brother, Dr. Hunter Beasley and his wife Lisa, of Lafayette; two granddaughters, Lily and Josie Parks; six nieces and nephews, Justin, Jordan Elisabeth and Jacob Beasley, Sean Frederick, Olivia Beasley and Johanna Beasley; his cousins, Lynda Tinnin Young and her husband Dr. John Young, Mike Tinnin and his wife Carolyn, and Rick Woodhouse and his wife, Rosie.



He grew up in Lafayette, LA where he graduated from Lafayette High School in 1968. He then attended Baylor University where he received his Bachelor's Degree in 1972. In 1974, he earned a Master's Degree from LSU in History and then earned his Master's Degree from Columbia University in Library Science.



After receiving his Master's Degree from LSU in History, he worked for the Louisiana Department of Social Services in St. Francisville, LA as well as The Catholic Worker in New York City, a homeless shelter on the Lower East Side started by Dorothy Day. He then worked as a librarian at Union Theological Seminary in New York City, NY and 30 plus years as a librarian at Eastern University, St. David's PA.



Reading, Music, and spending time with friends and family were his favorite pastimes.



Jon was a gracious and good person. He had many friends and he touched the lives of the many people he met. He and his wife Sam hosted "Camp Beasley" for his nieces and nephews for many years where he showed them many sites in Philadelphia, New York City, Washington D.C., and the Jersey Shore among others. He was a loving husband and brother who will be missed greatly.



Jon was a former member and church treasurer of Woodland Presbyterian Church in West Philadelphia. He was presently a member and bible teacher at Bethany Evangelical Church in Havertown, PA. He was also a member of the Friends of the Library, Eastern University.



A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, June 26, 2017 at 11:30 AM at Bethany Evangelical Church, Route 1, Havertown, PA 19083. Interment will be private.
