Joseph Steele Calhoun, Jr.
Age 91, of Bryn Mawr, PA on August 5, 2017. Joe was born on May 29th, 1926 in Philadelphia, PA to Joseph and Margaret Calhoun. He traveled the country as a child following his father's rise through the ranks of the then nascent auto industry. After attending the McDonogh School in Maryland, he enlisted in the Air Force in 1944, served as a gunner on bombers, and was stationed on Guam when World War II ended. While the nation rejoiced on VJ Day, Joe mourned the premature death of his beloved father on the very same day.
After the War, he attended the University of Pennsylvania where he met Paula Toland, his wife of 66 years. They raised three children together while Joe pursued a career first in life insurance, and then, for the bulk of his career, as a property casualty broker serving Fortune 500 companies for Marsh & McLennan and Johnson & Higgins offices in Philadelphia, Boston, New York, and finally again in Philadelphia.
Joe's love of golf came from his father. He passed it along to his two sons who are forever grateful for the gift. He enjoyed many rounds of golf at Waynesborough Country Club and lunches at The Racquet Club of Philadelphia. He was a natty dresser, a consummate gentleman, a man for others, and a man of God who was raised a Presbyterian but converted to Catholicism when he was 69 years old. Joe was a devoted son who loved his wife, his family and his country above all else. He conveyed a quiet strength to those fortunate enough to know him. He will be missed every day by those of us who loved him.
He is survived by wife, Paula, sons Drew (Mineko) and Jay (Patricia) (grandsons Ryan, Samuel, and Maxwell), and daughter Paula (Steve) (granddaughters Blair and Lili).
