Joseph A. Dellegrotto, “Lefty”, of West Chester, PA and formerly of Berwick, PA, passed away on December 19, 2022.
Joseph graduated from Berwick Area High School (1960) and attended Fredricksburg Military Academy (1961). He received his Bachelor’s Degree (1964) from Bloomsburg University and his Master’s Degree (1966) from the University of Delaware.
He served as a special education teacher at Interboro High School, prospect Park, PA, for over 41 years, working with students to enable them to be successful in their subjects with reading and math skills, while teaching the students their content subjects in combination with their literacy skills. In addition to his teaching position, he was also employed by the Devereaux Foundation for 18 years serving as a caregiver for the student residents. Earlier in his career, he was employed as a sales representative by the RCA corporation. Joseph was a member of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church and a faithful participant in weekly Masses. He also served as a Customer Service Driver at Mercedes Benz of West Chester, Porsche of the Main Line, and Lexus of Chester Springs.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, Joseph and Julia (nee Carabba) Dellegrotto, and is survived by his brother, John (Mary Anne), sister, Mary McKay (nee Dellegrotto) (Michael). He was a devoted family man by honoring his mother and father, who have been deceased for many years. He was very attentive and involved with his brother and sister who are many years his younger. An actual family fact is that he loved to share his birthday with his sister who was born on the same day. He was also close to his nieces Krista Dellegrotto, Lauren Kobylarz (Josh), Michele Naylis (Joe), and in recent years came to love and cherish his great niece Ruby and nephews Quinn and Austin, showering them with many generous gifts.
During the late 1950s and through 1960, he was a pitcher & first baseman for the Berwick Area High School Baseball team, winning a number of regional championships at a time before there were state championships. He was a die-hard Berwick High School football fan, being a season ticket holder for over 40 years and attending home as well as away games. He often sang the praises of the former football coach, George Curry and related Berwick’s team success as he traveled to away games.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation 10:00-11:00 AM Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 233 W. Gay Street, West Chester, PA 19380, followed by his 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial. Interment private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Catholic Relief Services, 228 W. Lexington Street, Baltimore, MD 21201 or to Fiorenza’s Food for Friends (F4), P.O. Box 89, Downingtown, PA 19335, would be appreciated.
