Joseph M. McCawley, Sr., 93, of West Chester, PA, formerly of Broomall, PA, passed away peacefully September 29, 2022, surrounded by his family.
Born on March 22, 1929 in Philadelphia, PA, he was a son of the late Michael J. and Florence (nee Condon) McCawley. He grew up in Upper Darby and graduated from West Catholic High School in 1947. Shortly after high school he began his career in Real Estate. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to pursue a successful career as a Builder/Developer of both residential and commercial properties in Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties. These projects included Parkview Court in Yeadon, Old Marple Estates and Marple Commons in Marple Township.
In 1960 Joe built his family’s home in Broomall where he and his wife Dolores raised their 4 children. For 30 years that family home was the location of many birthday, Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations too numerous to count. Friends as well as neighbors were always welcome to the house and to pool parties.
Joe was an avid golfer and a member of Llanerch Country Club for 60 plus years where he served as the Membership Director. Through the years he was also a member of Overbrook Golf Club, Seaview Country Club at the Jersey shore and Frenchman’s Creek in Jupiter, FL. He played in many member guests over the years at Llanerch, Rolling Green, Aronimink and other Philadelphia area courses. Additionally he had played numerous Pro-Am tournaments including The Andy Williams Pro-Am and the Dinah Shore Pro-Am.
Joe and Dolores moved to the Preserve at Applebrook in 2009 where he served as the first president of the Homeowners Association for the community.
Joe was predeceased by his loving wife Dolores A (nee Beckle) McCawley, his beloved son, Joseph Jr, and his sisters Peggy Grogan and Jean O’Neill. He is survived by his adoring daughters Patricia Price (Edward), Lori McGraw (Robert), Karen McCawley (Blake Doney), daughter-in-law Kim McCawley, his adoring grandchildren Kristen, Brian, Karis, Jamie, Jonathan, Sheila, Tara and Fallon. He doted on his 11 great-grand children Adrianna, Jack, Madigan, Brennan, Bo, Jack, Maisey, Joey, Bridget, Sloane and Holly and was looking forward to the arrival of twin great granddaughters this February. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Dorothy Guidone.
