Joseph L. Mallon, Jr., M.D., of Macungie, PA, age 58, died of Multiple Myeloma on September 9, 2015. Beloved husband of Mary (nee Pinto). Devoted father of Mary Kathleen, Joseph Stephen, and John Charles. Also survived by his parents, Joseph and Kathleen (nee Perkinson) Mallon of Philadelphia, sister Mary Brown (Tim), brothers Michael Mallon, Tom Mallon (Kelly), and Daniel Mallon (Colleen), nephew Thomas Mallon Jr., nieces Alexandra Mallon, Meghan Brown (Jim), Alison Brown, Emily Brown, Elizabeth Brown, Katie Mallon, Kara Mallon, and Grace Mallon and great-niece Helen Guerriero. Also will be sadly missed by his godfather and uncle Thomas Perkinson (Antoinette), aunts Mary Anne Schaffner (Joe), Helen Kambin (Parviz), and Joanna Perkinson, mother-in-law Constance Pinto, brothers-in-law Charles Pinto (Kathi), Eugene Pinto (Maria), sister-in-law Margaret McGann (Brian). Also survived by many cousins, friends, and co-workers.
Joe was born and raised in Philadelphia. He graduated from Our Lady of Calvary School, Holy Ghost Preparatory School, St. Charles Borromeo Seminary (B.A. Philosophy), and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (M.D.) After completing a residency in Internal Medicine at Temple University Hospital, he worked for twelve years as a General Internist at Abington Memorial Hospital. He then worked for two years as a Hospitalist physician at McLeod Hospital in Florence, South Carolina. He moved to the Lehigh Valley in 2007, working as a Hospitalist physician at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, where he was widely respected and loved.
The family sincerely thanks the many people who supported Joe throughout his illness. Special thanks to Dr. Suresh Nair, Lehigh Valley Hospital Cancer Center, Dr. Brendan Weiss, Abramson Cancer Center, University of Pennsylvania, as well as the nurses and staff of 7C at LHVH.
Relatives, friends, and co-workers are invited to Joe's visitation and Funeral Mass on Monday, September 14, 2015 at St. Thomas More Church, 1040 Flexer Avenue, Allentown, PA 18103. Visitation 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Mass of Christian Burial to follow immediately. Celebrant will be Rev. Edward J. Hallinan. Interment St. John Neumann Cemetery, Chalfont, PA.
