Joseph Lloyd Richenderfer, 88, of Glen Mills, PA, formerly of Broomall, PA, passed away peacefully at Maris Grove Retirement Community on Friday, June 30, 2023. He was the beloved husband of Geraldine “Gerry” H. (Kodan) Richenderfer for 65 years.
Born August 29, 1934, in Brandonville, PA, he was the tenth child of the late Lloyd E. and Caroline R. (Brennar) Richenderfer.
Joseph spent his career teaching mathematics at Conestoga High School in Berwyn, PA, for more than 30 years. A 1952 graduate of Bloomsburg High School, he served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, and graduated from Bloomsburg University in 1959. He later earned a master’s degree from Villanova University in 1966.
A wonderful father and grandfather, Joe was a devoted family man who meticulously captured and catalogued many years of happy memories on photos and home videos. He was very active in his children and grandchildren’s lives, as a tireless teacher and tutor, Little League coach, skilled painter and handyman, beloved dog-walker, and ever-patient participant in make-believe adventures.
During retirement, Joe and Gerry enjoyed vacationing with family at the Delaware and New Jersey beaches, and traveling with friends on trips organized by Middletown Township Parks & Recreation. A lifelong learner, Joe took computer classes in the 1990s. He was an early adopter of sending funny emails, and enjoyed connecting with family and friends on Facebook.
Joseph was a dedicated man of prayer, and an active parishioner of St. Anastasia Church in Newtown Square, PA, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He volunteered at Meals on Wheels of Delaware County. Joseph was kind to everyone; all who knew him, benefited from his selflessness and generous spirit.
Joseph was preceded in death by his loving daughter, Karen Woods; and by his nine older siblings, Florence L. McBride, Hervey L. Richenderfer, James H. Richenderfer, Reber E. Richenderfer, Raymond W. Richenderfer, Ida H. Bower, Fred A. Richenderfer, Walter F. Richenderfer, and Marie A. Knittle.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine “Gerry” H. (Kodan) Richenderfer; his daughter, Linda Richenderfer; his sons, Mark Richenderfer (Valerie), and David Richenderfer (Michelle); his son-in-law, Thomas A. Woods; his grandchildren, Nicole M.
