Joseph C. Sassa, Jr.
“Joe”, 84, of West Chester, PA passed away Easter Sunday morning.
His death on Easter Sunday was the end of his life on earth and the beginning of his eternal life in Heaven.
He was a devout Catholic. He was a graduate of Saint Thomas Moore HS ‘53, Saint Joseph’s University ’57 and supported the university generously over many years. He sent his children to Catholic schools; St. Bernadette Elementary and Bonner/Prendie HS. Three of his 6 children attended SJU Robert ’81, Anne ’87 and Susan ’90. From 2014-2015 he had 5 grandchildren attend SJU (Charlie, John, and Lindsay Concannon, David Dunlap and Julia Sassa).
After retirement he was a daily communicant at St. Bernadette’s in Drexel Hill PA and St. Joseph’s Parish in Sea Isle City NJ.
He founded the Joseph C. Sassa Insurance Agency in 1970, where he was a dedicated and gifted salesman, successfully winning many sales awards and annual trips around the world. He liked to say that he “worked out of fright” as he raised his 6 children. His business lives on and is thriving as the Sassa Concannon Insurance Agency.
Joe had an entertaining, loving personality. He enjoyed good food and drink, preparing many a breakfast; his signature “Dagwood” sandwich for lunch; or snacks for family, friends or anyone that stopped by his home. Cocktails before dinner were standard with Sinatra playing on the stereo. Everyone was always welcome! He especially enjoyed his time at the shore and talking to everyone that passed by his beach balcony.
He was a lifelong Philadelphia sports fan never missing Eagles or Phillies games.
He was a devoted husband and loved being with his family the most; always encouraging visits to his Sea Isle City Beach home and prioritizing family events.
Joe is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 62 years, Viola Sassa (nee DiCroce), and their six children; Joe III, Robert (Carmela), Barbara Daniels (Joe), Mary Dunlap (Allen), Anne Concannon (Jack) Susan Concannon (Chuck). He is also survived by his 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons.
Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, a memorial mass will be celebrated at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s memory can be made to the Children’s Tumor Foundation (join.ctf.org).
