Kathleen Bockol

Kathleen Costello Bockol of Newtown Square, passed away in her home on May 27 just 2 days short of her 53 birthday after a heroic battle with a rare form of brain cancer.
A graduate of Abington High and the University of Scranton where she majored in Medical Technology, Mrs. Bockol dedicated her professional career to helping bring life to others. She was part of the medical team at Albert Einstein Medical Center that completed the first frozen in-vitro embryo transfer in the Philadelphia region and the third in the country resulting in a successful birth. She later worked at Abington Memorial Hospital's fertilization practice and then at Pennsylvania Hospital's performing the laboratory procedures enabling many women to achieve their life dream of having children.
Mrs. Bockol fulfilled her dream celebrating the daily joys of her twin children, Sarah Megan Bockol and Eric Joseph Bockol. She was always there for them, culminating in being able to see their graduations this month from Bryn Mawr College and Lafayette College, respectively. In addition to being survived by her children Mrs. Bockol is survived by her husband of 26 years, Gary Bockol whom she met at Abington High where they were Physics lab partners, her mother Sonia Kucharski Costello, and her sister, Megan Costello Connell. Mrs. Bockol was preceded in death by her father, Thomas J. Costello.
During her fight with cancer Mrs. Bockol volunteered for several clinical trials, one of which was recently presented by Dr. Donald M O'Rourke, a neurosurgeon at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where Mrs. Bockol was undergoing treatment using a potentially promising immunotherapy. She was one of 12 patients to receive CAR-T cell therapy, which has been successfully used in patients with advanced acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This immunotherapy involves engineering the patient's own immune cells to recognize and attack their tumors. Mrs. Bockol's hope was that her participation would one day lead to a cure for Glioblastoma, the type of cancer she had.
A Funeral Mass is planned for 11 AM Wednesday, June 1, at St. Anastasia Roman Catholic Church 3301 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square PA 19073 where friends may visit the family 10
