Kim Frances Catherine Nastick passed away peacefully, at home, Monday, December 16th, 2019, of complications resulting from uncontrollable hypertension. She was 66 years old.
Kim was born August 12th, 1953, to Stanley J. and Frances Catherine (née Zwolinski) Nastick in Sewickley, PA. She attended Mount Gallitzin Academy and graduated from Quigley Catholic High School and Robert Morris College (as it was then known). She attended Duquesne University and earned a BA in History of Art, with Honors, from the University of Pittsburgh which named Kim a University Scholar, “one of those individuals who show high promise of making a significant contribution to society and progress.” She pursued graduate studies in Art History at the University of California, Berkeley, and completed her PhD at Bryn Mawr College, writing the dissertation, “A Flame That Consumes: Cy Twombly’s Fifty Days at Iliam,” based on a series of paintings on permanent loan to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She taught at Bryn Mawr College, where she was awarded the Doris Sill Carland Prize for Teaching Excellence, and at Villanova University from 1998 to 2019. Kim presented more than a dozen papers at regional and national scholarly conferences and at a meeting of the International Association for Philosophy and Literature. Kim created several innovative courses for the History of Art program at Villanova, and she was a mentor to many students who contribute, today, to the international world of art. Besides fine art, Kim loved the culinary arts and travel, especially to Rome, Lisbon, London, San Francisco, New York and the Jersey Shore where she spent many summers, first as a child and, then, annually, from 1986 until just last June. She is survived by her husband, John Carvalho, her cat, Salsa, two brothers, David and Daniel, several cousins and several more nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She is predeceased by her parents and a sister, Patricia. Kim will be missed, dearly.
