Liselotte M. Schmidt, a resident of White Horse Village, Newtown Square, PA passed away on June 24, 2013 after a long illness. She was 80 years of age at the time of her death. Ms. Schmidt was a graduate of Converse College, Spartanburg, South Carolina where she received her Bachelor of Music degree with a major in piano and music history. She later studied at the University of Michigan School of Music and the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. In 1960, she received a Master's Degree in Music Education from the Manhattan School of Music in New York and later a Doctor of Education Degree from the Teachers College, Columbia University, New York. Dr. Schmidt was also a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Munich, Germany, having received an International Educational Exchange Grant in Musicology for the study of 16th century music.
Dr. Schmidt began her teaching career as a member of the faculty of the Crane School of Music, State University College, Potsdam, New York, where she established the class piano program. She also taught at Southern Illinois University, Western Michigan University and Wilkes College. Dr. Schmidt served as chair of the Department of Music in the School of Music at West Chester University, West Chester, PA for nineteen years prior to her retirement in 2004.
Liselotte was the recipient of numerous grants and awards during her career. She was a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, National Music Honor Society, Mu Phi Epsilon and Tau Beta Sigma. She is listed in Who's Who of the World's Women and Who's Who in the Humanities.
Dr. Schmidt was a specialist in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and the Baroque period. She presented papers on these topics at the University of Munich, Halle and Magdeburg, Germany. She was an active pianist and organist and was a student of renowned concert organist, Dr. Gordon Turk.
Dr. Schmidt attended St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 104 Louella Avenue, Wayne, PA where a Funeral Service will be held on Friday, June 28, 2013 at 11:30 AM. Interment will be private.
