Lucien Roland Roy, 91, a 53-year resident of Rosemont, Pennsylvania, passed away Monday, December 28, 2015 peacefully and surrounded by his family, in Needham, Massachusetts where he resided since 2011.
Lucien was born July 17, 1924 in Québec, Canada, a son of the late Delphis Roland Roy and Simonne Berthiaume. He was married for 49 years to the late Nina Martianoff Roy who predeceased him in 2003.
He graduated from Université Laval in 1948 and received a Masters Degree in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1955. He was a tenured Mathematics Professor at Villanova University for forty years until his retirement in 1998. Lucien was a member of the American Mathematical Society.
Lucien was a wonderful teacher and popular with his students. He was a kind and devoted husband and father who instilled in his children and grandchildren a love of learning, including the French language and culture. He studied many languages including Latin, Greek, Russian, Hebrew, and Chinese and visited China twice. Lucien was creative and funny. After retirement, he and Nina took up gardening and ballroom dancing and were active members of the Fiesta Dance Club.
Lucien is survived by three children, Simonne N. Roy of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, Nicolas A. Roy and his wife, Evelyn Roy, of Toulouse, France, and Tanya M. Roy and her husband, Sam Liss, of Wellesley, Massachusetts. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Maxime Roy, Anika Roy, Rachel Roy, Anna Liss-Roy, Ethan Liss-Roy, and Lucie Gosson-Roy.
Lucien was predeceased by three brothers, Aimé Roy, Roland Roy, Claude Roy, and is survived by a sister, Yvette Roy Plamondon of Québec, Canada.
