Margaret Mary (Peggy) Benoit succumbed to cancer after a valiant battle with the disease for two years. She had been diagnosed on Christmas Eve, 2020. She was 79 years old.
Above all else, Peggy was a kind and generous mother of three sons, whom she raised alone after her divorce in 1983. Family was always most important to her.
Peggy was born during World War II in Philadelphia, and except for a couple of brief forays in other states, she lived in the Philadelphia area for her entire life. She attended Catholic Schools, and though she never attended college, she was a true lifelong learner. She was a voracious reader and beautiful writer, wielding an expansive vocabulary. She loved nature and gardening, and she could sew or alter just about anything.
Peggy worked at Waynesborough Country Club as a secretary for nearly 30 years; she retired at age 70. She absolutely loved retirement. She set out to see as much of the world as she could, traveling with friends and family. She adored being surrounded by the people she loved. She volunteered at her local library and for the local Democratic party, and she worked at the polls on election day. She had a deep sense of compassion for others, and she felt a profound sense of responsibility for the environment. Her smile could light up a room, even the doctors’ offices and eventually nursing facilities where she was being cared for. She never stopped smiling and caring for others.
She is survived by her sons, Steve (and son-in-law, Mike), Bill (and partner, Kris Fisher), and Jim (and daughter-in-law, Grace); three grandchildren, Veronica Trandahl (and husband, Ben), Jarrett, and Nicholas; and two great-grandchildren, David Trandahl and Charlotte Trandahl.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation 10:30-11:30 AM Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at SS Simon & Jude Church, 8 Cavanaugh Court, West Chester, PA 19382, followed by her Funeral Mass at 11:30 AM. Interment private.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Peggy’s memory to two causes about which she felt very deeply: Doctors Without Borders and the Sierra Club.
