Margaret Ann "Peg" Fitzgerald (nee Tormey) succumbed on June 3, 2015 in Philadelphia, after fighting a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Mrs. Fitzgerald was born on July 22, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York to her parents, Margaret and Joseph Tormey. Upon graduation from St. Joseph's Commercial High School in 1959, she worked in Manhattan as a secretary, until she married her husband Thomas, and settled down in the Philadelphia area. After raising her six children, she returned to work after two decades away and earned the respect of her peers and colleagues, first as an Administrative Assistant in the Career Services Department of Moore College of Art and later, as the Assistant to the Dean of Graduate Education at the Philadelphia University of the Arts, a position from which she retired after several decades in 2011.
She was an avid art collector and a frequent world traveler who visited, among other destinations, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Hungary, Austria, Greece, Spain, Scotland, France, and the Dominican Republic. But the country she enjoyed visiting most was Ireland, where her people came from and where she had many friends. In later years, she enjoyed being active in the running of the food pantry at St. Bernadette's in Drexel Hill and dedicated her remaining time to caring for her grandchildren.
Mrs. Fitzgerald is survived by her husband, Thomas, her children and sons-in-law, Christine and Steven Mackel, of Abington, Maggie and Patrick Mohnacs of Marlton, New Jersey, Thomas Jr. and Sormane Gomes of Philadelphia, Paul Fitzgerald and Sean Curry of Philadelphia, Mary and John Houston of Springfield, and Nora Fitzgerald and Eric Smith of Philadelphia. In addition, she is survived by her ten grandchildren, Allison, Kathryn, Grace and Rachel Mackel, Patrick, Olivia, and Brendan Mohnacs, Kevin and Conor Houston, and Charlotte Smith, all of whom brought her great pleasure and instilled in her great pride.
A viewing will take place at 9 am on June 6, 2015, at St. Bernadette's in Drexel Hill, to be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mrs. Fitzgerald's life. Interment SS Peter & Paul Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Haiti Life Connection Mission (www.lifeconnectionmission.org), a charity several of her children and grandchildren were active in, which made her very proud.
