Margaret Anne (“Peggy”) Hankee of Bryn Mawr, PA passed away on May 27, 2023 at the age of 86.
Peggy was born on February 17, 1937 to Patrick and Catherine (née Carr) Mooney. Peggy grew up in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia and attended West Catholic High School, graduating in 1954. That same year on a blind date, Peggy met the love of her life, James (“Jim”) Hankee. According to the story they told, they fell in love on the first date. On June 7, 1958, Peggy and Jim married at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Overbrook, PA.
Immediately following their wedding, Jim and Peggy moved to Fort Benning, GA and then to Fort Bragg, NC while Jim served in the United States Army until June 1962. Eventually they returned to the Philadelphia area and settled in Bryn Mawr where they lived for over 50 years.
Peggy was a devoted wife and mother, as well as a devout Catholic and member of St. John Neumann Church in Bryn Mawr. She was an excellent homemaker and cook and adored her devoted companion Barney, the family dog. She was also a lifelong sports fan of Notre Dame Football, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Philadelphia Phillies. A daughter of immigrants, Peggy was extremely proud of her Irish heritage. She and Jim traveled to Ireland more than 25 times.
Peggy is predeceased by her husband James; daughters, Ellen Patricia and Margaret Mary Kissinger (Jack;) parents Patrick and Catherine (née Carr) Mooney; and sisters Helen Daut (Stanley) and Mary Kinsella (Michael.) She is survived by her son James (Diane;) grandchildren Ryan, Daniel, and Brigid; brother Edward; and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation, Monday, June 5, 2023, 9:30–10:30 AM at St. John Neumann Church, 380 Highland Lane, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010, followed by her Funeral Mass, 10:30 AM. Interment Calvary Cemetery, Conshohocken, PA.
