Marie E. Boykin (nee Hewson), age 100, of Darby, PA, formerly of Secane, PA, passed away on March 17, 2019.
Marie was a graduate of West Catholic Girls High School in Philadelphia. She was an accomplished ceramist, artist, and teacher.
Marie loved her home, her family and her friends. She was a person of great faith, and an active parishioner of St. Eugene's Church, serving in many capacities there, in worship and service to the church and her community, including over twenty years as a Meals on Wheels volunteer. She was an avid reader, especially of history and art.
She loved gardening, particularly her roses and azaleas. She also loved listening to classical music, especially opera, yet her hearing deteriorated over time, due to a bout with Scarlet Fever when she was a child.
In her 60s, Marie's vision began to fade due to Macular Degeneration.
But she lived independently, taking care of her home (upholstering, wall papering, plumbing, electricity!) until injuries forced help.
Marie and her sister Ethel were always together, companions on many journeys.
She and her sister Kay also made many memorable travels together, including several trips to Europe, the Holy Land, and the Far East.
Marie loved her nieces and nephews, and there were many adventures with them on trips to the Shore, parks, lakes and museums.
Marie was especially fond of spending time with her Grandson, Bill, and traveled many miles to be with him.
The two had many happy hours together.
Marie was born on November 12, 1918 in Philladelphia to parents Catherine "Kit" Hewson (nee Magee) and George Hewson. Marie was predeceased by her beloved husband, William Lee Boykin, an Army Air Corps pilot who died in service in World War II in Europe.
She is survived by her daughter Catherine Boykin and husband Walter Morris, of Lyndonville, VT, grandson William Boykin Morris, his spouse Katlyn, and grandsons Connor and Owen, of Burlington, VT; her sister Catherine Fahringer of Coral Gables, FL; her nieces and nephews and their families--Marie Gee and Kathleen Reyntjens, of
Santa Fe, NM;
Paul O'Malley, of Austin, TX and Michael O'Malley, of Schwenksville, PA, and David, Lisa, Matthew, Erin and Sean, Kevin, Lindsay, Caitlyn, John Patrick and Brian O'Malley; Alessandra (O'Reilly) Bellwoar and Geisa (O'Reilly) Corbett (great nieces and nephews, and their families).
Her sister, Ethel O'Malley and nephews Patrick O'Malley, Dennis O'Malley and David O'Malley predeceased her.
The family wishes to especially thank Ron Reeves, Joan Peterson and Nancy Leonard for their loyal friendship to Marie.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit the family on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at 9:00-10:00 a.m. at St. Eugene Church, 200 S. Oak Avenue, Primos, PA, and to her Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m.
Interment will follow at St. Denis Cemetery, Havertown, PA.
