Marie Patricia Ward (nee McGarrity), 78, of Glen Mills, went home to God on February 7, 2017.
Born in Darby in 1938, she was the daughter of the late Thomas P. and Mary M. (nee Ryan) McGarrity.
Marie was the beloved wife of the late Maurice J. Ward, Jr., M.D.; loving mother of Kristine Ward (Ed), Maurice J. Ward III (Kristin), Christian Ward, and Rachel Deenis; beloved grandmother of Tommy Deenis, Christian Deenis, and John Deenis; loving sister of John McGarrity (Susan), and the late Thomas P. McGarrity (Edie).
A former nurse, Marie devoted her life to her family. In addition, she was a trusted confidant and friend of many.
Marie loved the beach, dating back to her teenage years, when she and her best friend Mary Lou (Guckie) McHale, would swim all day and do the jitterbug all night! In 1962, Marie met Maurice Ward at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital where she was working as a nurse and he was a resident. It was love at first sight, and their first date was, of course, to the beach! They married in June 1963, and lived in California for a year before ultimately making their permanent home in Glen Mills. They were blessed with their four children and raised them with unconditional love, patience, and great fun.
The Ward family vacationed in Cape May every year, and that is a tradition that continues with the Ward/Deenis grandchildren to this day. For Marie, the highlights of these vacations slowly changed from sandy days at the beach to leisurely afternoons playing cards and taking long walks. One thing that never changed, however, was Marie's fondness of The Merion Inn and her love of Uncle Charley's and Dry Dock ice cream!
Marie was a stylish and fun mother, who, on occasion, was unable to be reached by her children's school nurse because she was living it up in Strawbridge & Clothier! (Guckie loved those days!)
Marie was also a devoted daughter, sister, and sister-in-law. She was very close with her mother, her brothers, and their wives. Whether it was taking her mother to the doctor or to lunch, Marie was always there for her. Marie forged strong friendships with Maury's siblings as well, and was well-loved by Jeanne, Donald, and Pamela Ward.
Marie's fierce love for her grandchildren was unparalleled. They brought great joy to her life after she lost Maury in 1999. She brought tremendous joy to their lives too and left them with many, many happy memories.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation 9:30-10:30 AM Saturday, February 11, 2017 at St. Isaac Jogues Church, 50 W. Walker Road, Wayne, PA 19087 followed by her Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM. Interment Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Berwyn Fire Company, P.O Box 555, Berwyn, PA 19312.
