Marion Stafford

d. January 6, 2017

Marion Martha (Downey) Stafford passed into the hands of the Lord on January 6, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

Marion was born in Clogher, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland on November 15, 1934 to the late Martha and George Downey. She was predeceased by her parents and her brothers Jim, Jack and George Downey.

Marion was the beloved wife of George Stafford, with whom she shared 58 years of marriage. She was the love of his life and his most precious jewel. She was loved and adored by her three children, Lester Stafford (Kim) of Glenmoore, PA, Deirdre Smith (Tim) of Newark, DE and Sheila McThenia (Tom) of Gainesville, FL, her nine grandchildren, Bryan (Mallorie) and Tara Stafford, Kyle, Daniel and Megan Smith, and Tommy, Sam, Andrew and Noah McThenia, and her great granddaughter, Layla Stafford.

After graduating from Stranmillis Teachers College, Marion began her career teaching in Clogher, Northern Ireland, where she quickly caught the eye of the love of her life, George. Marion and George were married in 1958 at the Clogher Catheral after which they honeymooned on the Isle of Man. In 1962, Marion and George, along with their infant son, immigrated to the United States. They were welcomed with open arms and hearts by George's brothers John, Bill and Sam Stafford and their families as they began their new life in America. Marion taught briefly at the Friends Central School in Wynnewood, but soon chose to dedicate her time and energy to caring for her family. Her children were blessed to be raised by a kind-hearted, compassionate and selfless mother who taught them that the greatest gift in life is family and to love unconditionally. She will be remembered as a courageous, intelligent and graceful lady who loved deeply and was deeply loved.

Marion was a charter member of Advent Lutheran Church in West Chester, where she attended until her passing. She retired from the First National Bank of West Chester, where she spent many years working after her children were grown.

In addition to her husband, children and grandchildren, Marion leaves to cherish her memory her brother Eric Downey, brother-in-laws Sam (Ruthie) and Fallis Stafford, sister in laws Meryl (Cecil) Graham, Doreen Shepherd, and Gertrude Hahn and many nieces and nephews.
