Mary D. Cunningham, 69, of Broomall PA passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward, M. Cunningham on May 5, 2008 after almost 40 years of marriage. Born on September 24, 1950 in Bryn Mawr PA, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary Deegan.
Mary spent the majority of her professional life as a nurse. Nursing for Mary was not just a career, but a passion. She went back for her Bachelors Degree in Nursing while raising her 4 boys. She graduated from the University of Delaware in 2004. Many of the families that Mary worked with over her career recounted stories of how Mary’s faith and compassion helped them through their family members illnesses. She also helped to establish a parish nursing program at St. Laurence Parish in Upper Darby.
Mary was a strong advocate for patient’s rights. In March of this year, she planned to travel to Washington to discuss the high price of insulin for people with diabetes. Unfortunately, she was not able to make the trip due to her health and the COVID-19 outbreak.
Mary was a woman of strong faith. Her relationship with God helped her to overcome many challenges and maintain an ever-positive attitude.
In addition to her sons, Mary is survived by her 3 daughters-in-law, 3 grandsons, and 2 granddaughters. She is also survived by her twin sister, Kathy Lewis, her brother Ed, husband of Debbie, her brother Vince, husband of Mary, and her brother Michael, husband of Maureen. She was preceded in death by her sister Patricia, wife of Bill Bergmaier. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful friends. Mary often talked about how blessed she was to have such amazing friends and family. Her children are so thankful to all of those that helped Mary with prayers, rides, and visits during her fight with cancer.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation 9:00-10:20 AM Monday, September 14, 2020 at St. Pius X Church, 220 Lawrence Road, Broomall, PA 19008, followed by her Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM, which will be live streamed: https://www.facebook.com/thedonohuefuneralhome/ . Interment Calvary Cemetery.
Per the CDC guidelines and the State of Pennsylvania, masks are to be worn to the Viewing, Funeral Mass and Cemetery and social distancing is to be observed.
