On July 24th, 1928, God blessed Lucinda L. (Lumley) and Hugh E. Curran with a daughter they named Mary Lucy and called Mary Lou. She shared a wonderful childhood with her brother Hugh and sisters Margaret and Theresa. A stomach clenching laughter complete with tears falling down their cheeks filled their home; they always found humor in life and each other. Mary considered herself blessed to spend summers at the shore with her cousins and to share their lifelong friendship. She graduated from West Catholic High School for Girls.
On November 11, 1950, Mary Lou married the love of her life, Paul Dougherty, together they raised four sons and a daughter. The enjoyed a large circle of friends, the joys of travel, an appreciation of literature and the love of the Jersey shore, however, their greatest joy in life were their grandchildren. "Mom Mom", as her grandchildren called her, was the family matriarch in every sense, always sought after for her sage advice, her accolades over their accomplishments or to console their hurts. She never missed an opportunity to celebrate them and proudly attended all their events. As sociable as she was, she was the happiest in their private moments, a quiet day at the beach, an evening playing cards or as the recipient of her granddaughters' "make overs".
Mary Lou loved life and people, with her keen intellect she remained abreast of political or worldly matters until the end. She was active in local Delaware County politics for several years, volunteered in the library or as a home room mother, active in fundraising for local youth athletic associations, and a member of the Catholic Daughters. She loved her art classes and antiques. She saw the beauty in nature and tried to capture it in her artwork. She embraced life's difficulties, her dear husband's illness with a strength beyond all understanding, determined to demand the best care for him while accepting her own illness with a quiet dignity yet fighting until the end.
Sadly, on March 14, 2015, God called Mary Lou home to join her parents, her beloved husband, Paul and her sister Margaret. Leaving to cherish her memory, her brother Hugh, sister, Theresa, sons, Paul, Kevin, Thomas (Deborah), Christopher (Claire), daughter, Karen (Justin) and eleven grandchildren.
