Mary Catherine Dunwoody (née Homer), age 78, of Wayne, PA, passed away, suddenly, on October 21, 2022.
Born on June 29, 1944, Mary grew up in the loving home of the late Francis and Mary (née Lynott) Homer in Scranton, PA.
Mary graduated from Marywood University in 1966 and later earned a Master’s Degree and a Secondary Math Certification at St. Joseph’s University. Throughout her professional life, Mary dedicated herself to her calling as an educator–as teacher, principal, and district administrator–in schools in South Jersey, later in Narberth and Berwyn, PA, and finally in Southeast Delaware County. Mary was a passionate and committed educator, devoted to the success and well-being of generations of students and proud of their many achievements.
In 1968, Mary found her soulmate in William (Bill) Dunwoody. They married in June 1969 and remained devoted to one another for more than 53 years. Mary was the proud and loving mother of Mary Neumann (Andrew), Brendan Dunwoody, Sean Dunwoody (Heather) and Rory Dunwoody (Emiko). She was the cherished and doting Nana of Bebhinn, Erika, Miriam, Liam, Fionnuala, and Thomas. And she was the dedicated and loving sister of Dr. Francis X. Homer.
Mary was a lifelong learner and loved reading. With her husband, Bill, Mary enjoyed traveling and attending musical and theatrical performances. At home, Mary had a passion for playing and teaching piano. Their home was the gathering place for holiday meals and celebrations; she was happiest when surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Mary was sustained in her faith as an active member of St. Dorothy’s Church in Drexel Hill, PA. And Mary lived her faith, expressed in particular in her service as volunteer for several charities.
Relatives and friends are invited to her visitation on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at The Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at 10:30am at St. Dorothy’s Church, 4910 Township Line Road, Drexel Hill, PA 19026.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mary’s memory can be made to The American Heart Association, 1617 John F. Kennedy Blvd., Suite 700, Philadelphia, PA 19103.
