Mary Josephine Spitzer (née Boenning), 84, of Radnor, PA passed away on January 17, 2023.
Born in Montgomery County, PA in 1938, Mary Jo was the daughter of the late William Miller Boenning, Jr. and Margaret Beonning (née Evans).
Those who knew Mary Jo would often say, ‘God broke the mold with Mary Jo’. She truly was a unique and proud individual, enjoying all that life had to offer.
Mary Jo was an avid golfer and traveler. She especially enjoyed the friendships she formed as a result of her love for the game. She took up golf while living in Kent, Washington. Moving back to Pennsylvania in the 1980’s, she continued in her father’s footsteps and joined St. David’s Golf Club. She met her late husband, Franklin Spitzer at a golf outing at Waynesborough Country Club. Those that were present that day could not help but notice the chemistry between them. Mary Jo knew how to command a room and make her presence known. Shortly after her marriage to Franklin in 1982, she left St. David’s and joined him at Waynesborough.
She often reminisced about traveling with Franklin to Europe and New York City, dining at the finest restaurants, and playing in various golf tournaments. Later in life her passion for golf took her and Franklin to Amelia Island where she was able to fulfill a life-long dream of owning beach front property. As a ‘snow bird’ she enjoyed her condominium, the sunrises and the sound of the waves crashing on the beach. When arthritis limited her ability to play golf she turned to walks on the beach with TK, a golden retriever she inherited from her son. Her heart was full when animals were around, more recently she adopted a Maine Coon cat, Hershey.
Mary Jo was a loving mother and grandmother, a devoted sister, loyal friend, and proud of where she came from. She enjoyed spending time with her 3 grandchildren, spoiling them with candy, trips to Build-A-Bear and treating them to dinner. She cherished the memories she had traveling with her sister, Margie and the many rounds of golf they played together. A day did not go by where she did not reach out to family and friends to catch-up and connect.
She was proud of her family roots in the Philadelphia area and never missed an opportunity to remind you of her Boenning lineage. In the end, knowing that her health was failing she went home to be with Hershey and to spend the last few days enjoying the house she made a home.
In honor of Mary Jo, please remember to have some fun and toast to all that life has to offer. The family would like to thank the ER, Hospitalists and Hospice team at Paoli Hospital for their compassion and care during Mary Jo’s many stays. They’d also like to thank family and friends for their support and prayers.
Mary Jo was the beloved wife of the late Franklin H. Spitzer; loving mother of William B.J. Tucker (Erica); devoted grandmother of Elijah Henry Jenkins Tucker, Keaton Evans Miller Tucker, Leo William Francis Tucker; dear sister of Margaret Haines; aunt of Margaret Evans Villeneuve. She was predeceased by Francis Dawes Haines.
