Mary McCullough Kane

Mary Theresa (McCullough) Kane, age 91, of Springfield, PA, passed away October 25, 2022.  Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Margaret McCullough (Henry), and was the oldest of four children. Mary would often recount her “wonderful childhood”. She always gave credit to her loving, devout, Irish mother who raised four girls on her own after Mary’s dad died when she was only 8 years old. Mary graduated from West Catholic High School for Girls in 1948.

While working at Lee Tire and Rubber Co. in Philadelphia, she met her husband-to-be Jim. They married at St. Francis deSales in Philadelphia in 1958 and then raised their four children in Springfield, PA. She was devoted to Jim, helping him as informal “Vice President” of his pension planning business and sharing in his ministry as Permanent Deacon at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Springfield for over 25 years. Mary and Jim spent 63 beautiful years together until Jim passed away 4 months ago.

Mary was committed to creating a loving home for her four children; supporting them in school, sports and scouting activities when they were young. When they had their own children, Mary loved to babysit the grandkids.

Deeply devoted to her Catholic faith and St. Francis of Assisi parish, Mary was active in many parish activities and ministries including the Altar Guild, Bingo volunteer, lector, CCD aide, and faith sharing groups. She was a dedicated volunteer in the St. Vincent DePaul Society; arranging rides for medical appointments and quietly helping those in need.

Mary was a beloved Mom-Mom to eight grandchildren and GiGi Mom-Mom to ten great grandchildren. She and Jim hosted countless Sunday night dinners, holidays, and summer barbecues. Her home was always so welcoming. Mary enjoyed gardening and cheering Villanova men’s basketball.

Mary will be most remembered for her devotion to the Blessed Mother, love of family, generosity, hospitality, and always doing for others. Mary spent the last 14 months at Little Flower Manor Nursing Home where she was wonderfully cared for and loved by the nursing staff.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, James (Phoenixville, PA). Survived by her loving children Maryanne Rayer (Michael), James Kane, Jr. (Joan), Meg Riley (Shawn) and Ave Maria Preston (Edward).  Loving grandmother of Katie Porter, Colleen Boulden, Caroline Blessing, Molly Brightbill, Stephen Kane, Shawn Riley, Peter Kane and Mary Ellen Benalcazar.  Great-grandmother of Kacey, Julie and Amy Boulden; Declan, Moira, and Nolan Brightbill; Callan Riley, Luke Blessing, Jamie and Owen Kane and two more great grandchildren on the way. Dear sister of Catherine Witt and the late Anne and Peggy McCullough. Loving aunt to the Witt girls and many Kane nieces and nephews.
