Mercedes McKinley Harrison Smith, age 84 of Wyncote, PA and formerly of Philadelphia, PA passed away on October 13, 2014.
Born in Roanoke, VA, Mercedes was the daughter of the late Henry F. Harrison and Ruby (Fisher) Ferguson. She was the beloved wife of the late Delmas (Ralph) Smith; loving mother of the late Connie Fragie (Dewey) of Chowchilla, CA, Bonnie Moses (Richard) of Rydal, PA, Angelee Benner-Smith (Allen) of Coatesville, PA and David Smith of Cape May, NJ; adoring grandmother of 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; dear sister of Barbara Holley of Roanoke, VA.
A self-taught tailor, she ran Smitty's Valet in Center City Philadelphia ("Cuffs while you wait!!") and later worked as a receptionist at the Dessen, Moses & Sheinoff law firm in Philadelphia until her retirement in 2001.
Mercedes enjoyed Southern cooking and treasured spending time with her family. She was an active member of Old Pine Street Church in Philadelphia. Though she was enamored with the city where she raised her children, her voice never lost the lilt of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at United Church of Christ, East Goshen, 1201 N. Chester Road, West Chester, PA 19380. Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family at 9:30 a.m. An early luncheon will follow. There will be a private interment thereafter at the Old Pine Street Church Cemetery. Guests are invited to the Moses residence in Rydal on Thursday evening.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to UCC East Goshen or to Girls, Inc. of Greater Philadelphia, 1515 Market Street, Suite 1200, Philadelphia, PA 19102.
