Bruno Michael Raicich, age 73, formerly of Malvern, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2015. Born in Fiume, Italy, he was the son of the late Ermanno and Cecilia Raicich.
Throughout World War II, Bruno and his family were forced to move multiple times in northern Italy, due to bombings and uprisings in their towns. Post war, when he was 15 years old, his family was able to immigrate to Philadelphia based on his mother's occupation as a tailor, finding work in the Freeman suit factory. His father owned and managed a jewelry and engraving store on Jeweler's Row in Philadelphia.
Bruno's first job was as an usher at the movie theater. He said he learned speaking English from watching countless John Wayne and western movies at his theater job. Bruno attended Northeast Catholic High School, where he was the second leading scorer in the Catholic Basketball League. He worked at his father's store as an engraver before attending Temple University, playing briefly as a point guard for the basketball team and graduating with a degree in Political Science.
For the first half of his career, Bruno worked as a computer salesman, working for RCA, Prime Computer, Hewlett Packerd, and Aptec Computers. In the late 1980s, he went to own and manage three clothing and shoe stores, Leonard's Family Shoes and The Classic Lady in Malvern, and Brian's in East Goshen. In his later years, he managed large retail stores, such as Sports Authority and Kmart, and then finished his career as a substitute school-teacher, working in the Great Valley and West Chester School Districts.
Bruno loved all his cats and dogs he owned over the years, traveling to Italy to visit family and vacationing to Naples, Florida. He loved to swim, cook Italian dishes, host friends and family, and watch his beloved Philadelphia Eagles, especially the Buddy Ryan years.
He is survived by his son, Brian Raicich (Lindsay), step-children, Lynne Ann Munley (Mark) and Robert Bower (Lisa), his former wife Arlene Fay, his sister, Claudia Speri, and his grandchildren William Michael Raicich, Lauren Munley, Matthew Munley, Austin Bower, Brandon Bower, and Chase Bower.
Relatives and friends are invited to his memorial service on Sunday, September 6, 4:00-6:00 PM, at Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chester County SPCA.
