James N. Kelly, age 74, of Coatesville, PA, formerly of Upper Darby, passed away on September 25, 2015. Born in Edenderry, Ireland, he was the son of the late Howard and Roselea Kelly (nee Mullen).
James worked for Philadelphia based demolition companies for over thirty years. In his role as a demolition superintendent, James traveled extensively, supervising jobs in California, New York, and Alabama. Before his retirement, James was responsible for the Philadelphia Navy Yard reconstruction project for Urban Outfitters. The artistic display of battleship anchor chains, situated immediately outside Urban's Commissary Restaurant at the Navy Yard, was created by James and a plaque bearing his name is attached to the sculpture.
Most recently, James has enjoyed caring for his grandchildren, in some cases, putting them on the bus in the morning and driving them to their after school events, and in others, watching them while their parents traveled for work. Known as "Grandad Kelly" around the local elementary school, James enjoyed his time helping teachers and students as a homeroom "grandad."
An avid watcher of sports, James was an expert on all things horse racing, and he thoroughly enjoyed criticizing the Eagles and Chip Kelly every Sunday during football season.
James is survived by his 3 wonderful children Kathleen Boyce (Joseph), Anthony Kelly (Colette), and Robert Kelly (Beth), his brothers Wilden Kelly and Robert Kelly, and his 6 grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Thursday, October 1, 2015 7:00-9:00 PM and Friday, October 2, 2015, 10:30-11:30 AM The Donohue Funeral Home, 43 West Lancaster Avenue, Downingtown, PA (610) 269-3080 and to his Funeral Mass Friday, October 2, 2015 12:00 PM St. Joseph Church, 335 Manor Avenue, Downingtown, PA.
