Mrs. Grace McGuffie
September 18, 1942 — May 5, 2016
Grace Marie McGuffie (nee Fischer), 73, of Titusville, FL and formerly of Gaithersburg, MD passed away peacefully on May 5, 2016 at her home in Florida surrounded by her husband, daughter, and son-in-law.
Born in Darby, PA, Grace was the daughter of the late Harry J. and Grace A. (Boeggeman) Fischer. She was the beloved wife of Jean-Claude McGuffie; loving mother of Lucy McGuffie and her husband, Michael Rick Rollins of Portland, OR; dear sister of Maryellen Werner (Robert), Bill Fischer (Rosa), Anne Fischer, Kathy Scholz (Don), and Sharon Pierson (Brian). Grace is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, three uncles and an aunt, and many cousins.
She was a graduate of Archbishop Prendergast High School in Drexel Hill, PA, Gwynedd-Mercy College, where she earned her BA, The Catholic University of America, where she earned her MA. She did coursework towards both a medical degree and a PhD. Grace worked as a high school chemistry teacher until her retirement. She was once an editor of the Journal of Chemical Education, an internationally recognized peer-reviewed journal, and was part of the writing team for a widely used high school chemistry textbook.
She played violin as a child and young adult and was a member of 5 orchestras, often occupying the first chair in the violin section. She spent 10 years as a young adult as a Sister of Mercy in Merion Station, PA. She fought bladder cancer valiantly for 27 years. After being diagnosed in 1988, she decided to spend the rest of her life traveling the world. She and her husband have visited every state in the United States and every continent except Antarctica.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Visitation 7:00-9:00 PM Wednesday, May 11, 2016 and Thursday 9:00-10:00 AM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA 19382, 610-431-9000, followed by her Funeral Mass 10:30 AM at SS Simon & Jude Church, 8 Cavanaugh Ct, West Chester, PA. Interment SS Peter & Paul Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to be made to Moffitt Cancer Center, 12902 USF Magnolia Drive, Tampa, FL 33612. https://www.moffitt.org/eforms/donationmodal. Moffitt is one of the leading cancer research institutes in the United States. Grace sought treatment there during her last several months.
