Mrs Jeanne Jacobs

May 14, 1928 — January 31, 2015

Jeanne Grace Jacobs (nee, McHenry), 86, passed on peacefully on January 31, 2015. Recently living at Dunwoody Village in Newtown Square, PA., she had spent many wonderful years at her home in Stone Harbor, NJ with her beloved husband, the late George Jacobs. She was preceded in death by her loving brother John J. McHenry. She is survived by her precious sister, Rosemary Casey and by 5 nieces and nephews, 11 grand-nieces and grand-nephews and 11 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

Jeanne Grace (or Aunti Gace to her adoring nephews and nieces) was born in Philadelphia, PA. to Mary and Thomas McHenry. Her big sister, Rosemary, got her birthday wish, a little sister, Jeanne Grace, on May 14, 1928; a day after Rosemary's own birthday. Jeanne Grace attended Transfiguration Catholic Grade School and then graduated from West Catholic High School.

Her early career was on stage and she performed at Hedgerow Theatre in Media, PA and then onto New York, where she joined the Black Friars Broadway Group founded by a Dominican Priest. While working in both theatre and television in New York, as well as the "Playhouse in the Park" here in Philadelphia, her father, Philadelphia City Commissioner Thomas P McHenry, suffered a heart attack. Jeanne Grace immediately returned from New York to care for her father. Her mother, Mary McHenry, then fell ill and Jeanne Grace stayed in Philadelphia to care for both her parents. She began to work in the Philadelphia City Court system as a crier and put her theatrical talent to work opening Court like no other court crier.

She met her late husband, George Jacobs, while working in Magistrate Court on Filbert Street near the George Jacobs Big and Tall men's store. George saw her on Filbert street and said "I'm going to marry that girl some day" and he did - 15 years later. A congenital eye disease eventually led to blindness for George, but with the help of his seeing eye dog, Beacon, Jeanne Grace cared for him until his passing in the summer of 2005. They spent many wonderful years at home in Stone Harbor, NJ. where Jeanne Grace was active in the local community and served as an Ecumenical Minister at St. Paul's Catholic Church.

She also volunteered at Crest Haven Nursing Home in Cape May Court House, NJ, serving communion to residents on Sundays. She moved on to Dunwoody Village a few years back but always returned to the "shore" to visit her many friends and the place she loved so much.

Relatives and friends are invited to her Viewing, Thursday, February 5, 2015, from 10:00-11:00 AM and to her Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Anastasia Church, 3301 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA. Interment SS Peter & Paul Cemetery.
