Nancylee Smith Miller 10/24/1927 – 4/12/2024 - Born in New Albany Indiana, Nancy spent most of her life in Devon, Pennsylvania.
She attended New Albany High with her sister Janet Applegate and went on to Indiana University where she met her husband, Bob, was elected President of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors.
Mother of Eric (Christina), David (Nancy), Sara, and Steven (Gigi). A grandmother of nine, (Whitney, Nick, Dana, Evan, Natalie, Andy, Sydney, Christian and Carter) and great grandmother of five (Harper, Angus, Conrad, Mason, and Sophia).
After the death of her husband, Robert Myron Miller in 1968, Nancy raised her family of four as a single parent.
A beloved English teacher at General Wayne Jr HS and Great Valley HS for over 30 years, with a year in between earning her master’s degree in education at West Chester University. Nancy had a love of theater as the faculty advisor for GVHS Drama Guild and the director of several school musicals. During summer months she chaperoned many student trips to Europe and attended Shakespeare festivals in Canada and Oregon and the Shaw Festival in Niagara. Taking a sabbatical in 1980, Nancy spent a year in London, England, studying British literature abroad while attending theater daily.
In retirement, her love of travel included countless trips with many friends over six different continents. She was also the secretary of the Alumni Theta group for the Main Line while volunteering at the Neighborhood League store in Wayne.
She passed away in her sleep at 96, having achieved many personal goals and being proud of her family. She will be missed.
We will have a “Celebration of her Life” in Berwyn on May 4th starting at 3:00 PM at the Home of Steve & Gigi, 542 Hickory Ln. There will also be a more formal celebration at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park, 2776 Charlestown Rd, New Albany, IN 47150, date and time to be determined.
