Norman Wheeler

February 22, 1927 — June 21, 2020

Norman D. Wheeler, 93, of West Chester, PA, passed away peacefully at home, on June 21, 2020.

Born on June 22, 1927 in Upper Darby Pa, he was the son of the late Frank H. and Lucille A. (nee Pengelly) Wheeler.

He was preceded in death by his older sister Phyllis Ragan.

He is survived by wife Florence (nee Hall); sons, Norman, Vincent, Bruce and Donald; daughter-in-law Jun; and grandchildren, Andrew, Aubrey and Hejin. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A graduate of Upper Darby High School, he went on to serve with the U.S Marines during the Korean War. After his discharge, he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, later Conrail, in the Accounting Dept, retiring in 1992 after 44 years.

He also tended bar in many Philadelphia area taverns and hotels, with the Union League of Philadelphia being his last assignment. With the extra income he purchased a home at the Jersey Shore and enjoyed many summers with his family at the beach and fishing on the Delaware Bay.

He was an avid bicyclist and once biked from Prospect Park to Cape May accompanied by his wife, supplying water and encouragement. After retiring from the railroad, he worked for Hertz as a driver and continued to work part time, well into his eighties. During his post retirement years, he and his wife would spend a couple of winter months in Florida.

He was a member of Prospect Lodge No. 578 Free and Accepted Masons, in Prospect Park, PA., another activity that kept him busy during retirement.

In his later eighties, the gradual onset of Alzheimers, along with a case of COVID-19, resulted in his final day, Fathers Day 2020. He was visited that day by his wife and 4 sons and passed away 3 hours after the visit.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a Life Celebration will be planned for a later date.
