Patricia Jean Monahan (née Curran), 89, of Hershey's Mill, West Chester, PA died peacefully at home on October 21, 2016 surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Born in Abington, PA on February 4, 1927, Patricia was preceded in death by her parents Dr. Francis J. Curran and Margaret A. (Barry) Curran of Jenkintown, PA, her beloved husband Eugene (Gene) M. Monahan and her sisters Joan C. O'Neill and Jane C. McIlvaine. She is survived by her twin sister, Helen C. Warren, and her brother, James F. Curran (Catherine); her children Daniel F. Monahan (Carole), James G. Monahan (Katherine), Jane T. Monahan (Nadia Gabi), Thomas B. Monahan (Sherry), and Kathryn M. Monahan with whom Patricia lived since 2010; grandchildren Erin F. Monahan, Caitlin C. Reinhart (Jeff), Margaret P. Monahan (Thomas Hoelen), Claire G. Monahan (Nick Burrell), J. Paul Monahan, P. Jeanne Monahan (Jameson Jones), Rose K. Monahan (Henry Jochem), Anthony J. Monahan and Fiona L. Monahan; great-grandchildren Jameson E. Jones, Alexander A. Hoelen, Annabelle Lee Jones and Nolan D. Reinhart; and 19 nieces and nephews.
Patricia was a 1944 graduate of Melrose Academy, an all-girls college prep school founded by the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart, in Elkins, Park, PA, where she participated in theatre, basketball and field hockey, and a 1948 graduate of Beaver College now Arcadia University in Glenside, PA where she earned her Bachelor's degree in English and was selected to appear in the 1947-1948 edition of Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges, was a member of Phi Delta Epsilon, a honorary collegiate journalism fraternity, and Alpha Kappa Alpha in recognition of scholarship in the study of philosophy, editor-in-chief of the Beaver Review, a creative arts magazine, and news editor of the Beaver News. Later Patricia pursued her master's degree in English at Fairfield University in Hartford, CN and then the University of Delaware where she completed her graduate course work and obtained her certificate to teach high school English. While in college, Patricia worked as an assistant to Maureen Daly, editor of "The Sub-Deb Column" of the Ladies Home Journal magazine. After graduating from Beaver College in 1948, Patricia moved to New York City with her twin Helen and sub-let a penthouse on Fifth Avenue overlooking Central Park with four other girls. She worked for the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers and volunteered at Dorothy Day's Catholic Social Worker Hospitality House. She met Gene in 1949 at the B. Altman's department store where they were both working for the holidays. In January 1951, Gene was appointed as a Special Agent with the F.B.I. and Patricia and Gene were married in Jenkintown, PA on June 2, 1951 officiated by Reverend George Daly of the Maryknoll Fathers. They were stationed in San Francisco and then Los Angeles before returning to the New York City area in 1953. After Gene left the F.B.I. in 1957 to join the chemical sales department of Shell Chemical Company, they lived in New Brunswick, NJ, Danbury, CN and then Natick, MA. During this time, Patricia was active in C.C.D. as a religion teacher and in C.Y.O. directing plays including winning first place in the 1961 Connecticut C.Y.O. Drama festival. In 1965, Gene accepted the position of marketing manager with Sun Olin Chemical Company in Marcus Hook, PA and they settled in Wilmington, DE. In 1968, Patricia began teaching sophomore English at Mt. Pleasant High School and then A.I. DuPont High school before retiring in 1982. At Mt. Pleasant High School, Patricia was the faculty advisor to the student newspaper and taught seminars on film and popular culture. In 1982, Gene accepted the position of Vice President of Sales for Houghton Chemical Company in Cambridge, MA. They lived in Boston until Gene retired in 1991 and then moved to Hershey's Mill where they remained. Throughout their lives together, Pat and Gene enjoyed trips to the Plaza in New York City and to the Club Carlyle to see Bobby Short, week-ends and vacations at their shore home in Avalon, NJ with their children and grandchildren, golf vacations to Florida with their many friends, several trips to Europe, and an active social life as members of the Penn Oaks, Concord and Hershey's Mill County Clubs in West Chester, PA and Brae Burn County Club in Newton, MA where they played countless rounds of golf together and with their friends and their children.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 9:30 a.m., Ss. Peter and Paul Church, 1325 Boot Road, West Chester, PA 19380 followed by Words of Remembrance at 10:30 a.m. and Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m.
