Paul Staley

September 9, 1929 — January 5, 2018

Paul R. Staley, former Chief Executive Officer of the PQ Corporation of Valley Forge, PA, passed away on January 5, 2018. He was 88 years old.



Born September 9, 1929 in New Britain, Connecticut, Paul was the eldest son of Edward and Josephine Staley. He earned a B.A. in Architecture from Dartmouth College where he was Captain of the 1951 Dartmouth Football Team. In 1954, after graduating from Harvard Law School, Paul spent three years in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant in the Seabees. In the twelve years following, he worked for Proctor and Gamble, progressing to a Multi-Division Plant Manager.



In 1969, Paul joined PQ Corporation. He was elected President in 1973 and named Chief Executor Officer in 1981. Under his leadership, PQ became a world-wide manufacturer of silicate derived specialty products and solid glass microspheres.



Always concerned about the community and our country, Paul served on numerous local and national boards. Locally, he served thirty years on the Tredyffrin Township Planning Commission and the Municipal Authority, and was a past President of The Upper Main Line YMCA. Nationally, he was involved with the Boards of Lyondell Chemical, Ensign Bickford Corporation, The Conference Board, and Marion Labs.



Paul co-authored a book titled "Questioning Corporate Hierarchy" advocating freedom in the work place.



Paul is survived by his beloved wife, Joan Staley (nee Case), four children from his first marriage, Chris Staley, Jes Staley, Peter Staley, and Janet Staley. In addition, are his step-children, Leigh Curry and Katherine Dowson. He is also survived by a brother, Alan Staley, a sister Linnie Sternik, his former wife, Carolyn Staley, and nine grandchildren.



Paul was known as a kind and generous person and will be deeply missed by all.



A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 3, 2018, at 1:00 PM at the Main Line Unitarian Church, 816 S. Valley Forge Road, Devon, PA 19333. Interment private.
