Philip “Phil” M. Lydon Sr. of Springfield, PA was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and detective. After a valiant battle with cancer, he passed at the age of 68 in the early morning of Sunday September 24th, 2023 surrounded by his loved ones. Despite all odds and challenges against him, Phil fought to the very end and left this world on his terms.
As a native to Collingdale, PA, Phil was born on August 4th, 1955 to Philip M. Lydon and Ethel M. Lydon-Nearey. Phil graduated from Collingdale High School in 1973. It was during this time that he met his Honey, Constance “Ginger” V. Lydon while she worked at the restaurant across the street from the gas station where Phil worked.
Phil and Ginger would go on to build a family of 5 children; Phil (Megan), Mary (Josh), Kellie, DeeDee (Mike), and Alyssa. He was also the grandfather to 8 grandchildren; Rosa, Madison, Caleigh, Jake, Aubrey, Stephen, Leo, and Aria. Phil was the baby brother to 3 sisters; Gerry (Joe), Mickey, and Kathie. He left behind a large and loving family to carry on his legacy.
Phil dedicated over 30 years of his life to the University of Penn Police Department as an officer and then a detective. At Penn, Phil built a second family who his family could rely on to take care of him on and off the job. He was also a former member of Collingdale Fire Company #1 where he built fond memories.
Phil loved to make those around him laugh and enjoy life’s finest moments. Phil and Ginger spent a great deal of time at their home in the Poconos with their pup Longfellow. They would spend many mornings on their back deck drinking a cup of coffee and enjoying the mountain views. Phil enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren grow up, cheering them on whenever he could. He would share these accomplishments to anyone who would listen and did so with a smile on his face.
Family and friends are invited to Phil’s Visitation on Thursday September 28th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and also on Friday from 9:30 AM – 10:45 AM followed by his 11:00 AM Funeral Service at The Knoetgen-Donohue Funeral Home, 746 Kedron Avenue, Morton, PA 19070. Interment: SS Peter & Paul Cemetery.
In lieu of flower donations, the family requests donations be made to Abramson Cancer Center or American Cancer Society as organizations like these provided Phil many additional years of an exceptional life with his family.
