R. Philip Genther

R. Philip “Phil” Genther, 71, of West Chester, PA passed away peacefully on May 19, 2023. 

Phil was born in Philadelphia on November 6, 1951 to the late Robert and Sarah (née McBride) Genther and was the oldest of 4 boys including Joseph (Karen), Christopher (Linda) and the late Raymond.

Phil spent his childhood in Drexel Hill, PA and was a 1969 graduate of Monsignor Bonner. During his years at Monsignor Bonner Phil developed a love for running and received an offer to run at LaSalle College in Philadelphia.  Phil finished his college years and graduated from St Joseph’s University and later went on to receive his MBA from West Chester University.

After college, Phil began his life and created a beautiful family with Christine (Brennan) Genther. Phil was the loving father of Brendan (Tessa), Elizabeth (fiancé, Dennis Roney) and Matthew (Julie); proud grandfather of Riley, Avery, Deklyn, Seamus, Chloe, Brendan and Layla.

Phil devoted his life to coaching track and field and helping the youth of the Philadelphia area achieve their best on and off the track.  Phil spent over 50 years coaching at various schools including Monsignor Bonner, Cardinal O’Hara, Interboro High School, Devon Prep and Villa Maria Academy. He was a 7-time coach of the year, coached 65 state medalists, over 100 nationally ranked athletes, 2 high school all Americans and assisted numerous athletes achieve academic and athletic scholarship.  His impact through coaching is immeasurable and has allowed so many achieve greatness!

Phil had a successful professional career in facilities operations and management at many local education institutions including The University of Pennsylvania, Bryn Mawr College, The Westtown School, and Villa Maria Academy.

Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family on the night of Tuesday, May 23rd from 6:00-8:00 PM and Wednesday morning, May 24^th from 9:00-10:00 AM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA.  A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 AM at SS Simon & Jude Church, 8 Cavanaugh Ct, West Chester, PA. Interment SS Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
