R. Daniel Vetre, 96, of Havertown, PA, passed away on April 30, 2017.
Born in New Britain, CT in 1920, he was the son of the late John and Mary Vetre (nee Sangermana). Dan grew up shining shoes and selling newspapers during the depression. He served honorably in the Merchant Marines during World War II and crossed the Atlantic several times. Dan then worked as a Sales Manager in the carpet industry for Bigelow, Lee's, and Mohawk.
Dan belonged to the American Merchant Marine Veterans, the Catholic War Vets Post 731 and was a member of Sacred Heart Church for 30 years, where he served as an usher. He spent his summers in Ocean City, NJ and went on over 40 cruises with his wife, Blanche. Dan enjoyed fishing, cruising, travelling, cooking, and tinkering at his work bench. Most of all, he loved his family and friends who will remember him as a people person and a family man.
Dan was the beloved husband of the late Blanche C. Vetre (nee Coggins), the loving father of Elaine Vetre and Gary Vetre (Denise), devoted grandfather of Christina Salazar (Jorge); dear brother of Anthony Vetre and Edward Vetre. He was predeceased by his first wife, Honor Vetre (nee Latimer) and his siblings, Sisto, Joseph, Ralph, John, Jr., Francis, Samuel, Rose, Theresa, Ruth, and Julia.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation Thursday, May 4, 2017 6:00-8:00 PM and Friday, May 5, 2017 8:30-9:30 AM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike (cor. Lynn Blvd.), Upper Darby, PA (610) 449-0300 and to Funeral Mass 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Church, Manoa and Shelbourne Roads, Havertown, PA. Interment SS Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
