Ralph M. Gagliardi, formerly of West Chester, PA, died peacefully on October 10th in Exton, PA.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years Irmgard (nee Boldzau), his five children, eight grandchildren and his three siblings Nicholas, Gene and Louise. He was the son of the late Eugenio and Clara (nee Vitale) Gagliardi. His children and their families are Michael F. Gagliardi (Kimberly) of West Chester, PA and their children Renee and Michael, John E. Gagliardi (Joanna) of West Chester, PA and their children Amanda and Bill, Monica M. Hughes (Anthony) of West Chester, PA, and their children Nicholas and Brian, Ralph W. Gagliardi (Gillian) of Downingtown, PA and their children Madison and Carla and his son Peter M. Gagliardi of Exton, PA.
Ralph graduated from Lower Merion High School in 1951 and Pennsylvania Military College in 1955 as a 2nd Lieutenant. He later went on to become a 1st Lieutenant and eventually a Captain in The U.S. Army. He served in Germany for two years in the 63rd Air Battalion and six years in the PA National Guard.
As a child, he worked with his two brothers in the family store at 60th and Vine. In 1957 they built a small government inspected meat plant behind the grocery store and started making portion controlled meat products. They moved the business to West Chester in 1969 where his brother Gene developed "Steak-Umm" which became an instant success and national item.
The company was sold to H.J. Heinz in 1980. After the company was sold, Ralph worked with his children and owned various local businesses.
Ralph loved his grandchildren and enjoyed being with and talking to people.
Friends and relatives are invited to his Visitation 7:00-9:00 p.m. Thursday Eve and 9:00-10:30 a.m. Friday at The Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA 19382, 610-431-9000 and to his Funeral Mass 11:00 a.m. at SS Simon & Jude, 8 Cavanaugh Ct., West Chester, PA 19382. Interment Private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to the American Parkinson's Disease Association LAPD, 135 Parkinson's Drive, Staten Island, NY 10305.
