Ralph Sheppard

Ralph F. Sheppard "Shep", 89, of Springfield, passed away on January 2, 2014.



Born in 1924, he was the son of the late Edith and Ralph F. Sheppard of Prospect Park.



After graduating Prospect Park High School, he attended West Chester State University until he was called into the US Air Force during WWII. He became a tail gunner on a B-24 bomber, where, for bombing missions he earned 7 Battle Stars in the South Pacific theatre. He was awarded Philippines Liberation medal, American Campaign medal, Asian Pacific campaign medal, for combat missions over New Guinea, Rabaul, Borneo, and other captured islands in the Western Pacific. He was discharged from the U.S. Air Forces in January 1946.



Mr. Sheppard married the late Marie McGonigle of Germantown, Philadelphia in 1946. They lived 53 of their 57 years together in Springfield, where he was active civically as well as politically. As an avid golfer interested in the future of the Springfield Country Club, he was appointed one of the seven original members of the Advisory group. Later Mr. Sheppard was elected chairman of the Republican Party of Springfield.



Mr. Sheppard was employed for 25 years as a VP of the First Pennsylvania Bank of Phila. Since retiring in 1985 he has spent time enjoying his family, golfing, gardening and his Big Band music. After the death of his wife, Mr. Sheppard has resided with his daughter in Sadsbury Twp., Chester County.



He was the loving husband for 57 years of the late Marie McGonigle; loving father of Susan Franco of Sadsbury, the late John P. (Susan) of West Chester, Karen S. Naylor of Havertown, Barbara Gallagher (Patrick) of Springfield; loving Grandfather of 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; dear brother of David Sheppard (Celia) of New Mexico.



Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing 9:30-11:00 AM Monday, January 6, 2014 and to his Funeral Mass 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Consolation Church, 603 W. Second Avenue, Parkesburg, PA. Interment will be private at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
