Raymond L. Freyberger, Jr
July 8, 1927 - July 6, 2016
It is with great sorrow to announce the passing of Ray on July 6th, 2 days before his 89th birthday of a lengthy illness.
Son of the late Anna (Gross) and Raymond, predeceased by his brother Allen.
Ray is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 62 years, Betty Jane. He was also the loving father of Kenneth (Julie) of Ashburn, Va. Carol (Jack) Muhs,
of West Chester and Kim (Tim) Mullen of Exton. Loving Pop-pop to 9 Grandchildren; Nicole, Alec and Brad Freyberger, Kristen & Michael Mandler, Nicholas & Courtney Mullen, Chris & John Muhs.
Ray was born in Newark, NJ, where he spent a lot of time on his grandfather's farm, hence began his love for farming and gardening.
He graduated from Irvington High School, NJ where his love of football took off, as the High School Team's all-star tight end.
Ray was a WWII Vet in the US Navy on Destroyer Duty, Pacific Theater on The USS Livermore DD429. After the Navy, Ray did some modeling in NYC and this sent him off on a yet another path and love, in advertising.
He graduated from Newark Fine & Industrial Arts School and began tapping into his creative genes. Ray worked as an Advertising Director at Kelly Smith Co. (NYC) and also at Ward Griffith Co.
After falling in love with Betty Jane and starting a family in NJ, he was then transferred to the Philadelphia area and thus began a career in real estate and land development. Then he became owner-broker of Town & Country Realty. He was the planner/developer and visionary of many local housing communities such as Hershey's Mill, Country Gate, Forge Mountain North, Fox Fields, Shadow Oak, Pickering and Rochambeau. He then began to refurbish an old Devereaux School Summer Camp, in Embden, Maine, in which he was very proud. His vision became a reality as it transformed into a beautiful retreat with lake side cottages, onsite pool, boating and restaurant.
His retirement never slowed down until the last several years, due to illness. Ray was a child at heart, and always up for anything fun, involving food, drink, beach, boating, traveling or anything Phillies or Eagles. Such an avid Philadelphia Fan of sports, one would think Ray was the head coach at times... But forever an optimist, he never gave up on his endeavors. Ray was an artist and loved painting, gardening, graphic design & photography. He was forever tinkering with his computer, whether it was a photo album, a picture for a friend, the family tree, greeting cards, digital paintings....and his beloved and never ending projects: his Hershey's Mill book and his book on the Civil War.
Ray will be missed by his family and his friends more than words can express. He never had a negative word to say about anybody or anything, and with his passing, we will all try to live by these actions, in his loving memory.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Willow Tree Hospice, 616 East Cypress St., Kennett Square, PA 19348 or to Community Volunteers In Medicine, 300 Lawrence Drive, West Chester, PA 19380, www.cvim.org.
