Raymond York

October 28, 1922 — March 15, 2015

Raymond C. York, age 92, of Drexel Hill, PA, formerly of Upper Darby and Clifton Heights, PA, passed away on March 15, 2015. Born in Clifton Heights, he was the son of the late Raymond W. and Emma York (nee Hannum).



Ray was a graduate of Clifton Heights High School. He worked at Atlantic Refining for a few years, then enlisted in the Army Air Force. During World War II, he was a qualified bombardier and served as a ball-turret gunner on a B-17 bomber out of Knettshall, England. He also flew 13 missions over Germany. He continued his military service in the Army Reserves following the war. He studied design drafting and worked for over 25 years at General Electric Switchgear in Philadelphia.



As a young man, he was an active Boy Scout. He joined Clifton Heights Fire Company where he became a life member. He was a dedicated lifetime member of Highland Park Fire Company where he was Past President and a Professional Firefighter for Upper Darby Township.



He was a Charter member of VFW Post 6317 transferring to Post 928 in Folsom, PA where he became a life member. He was a past Post Commander, a 7th District Commander, past President of General Electric AFL-CIO Union Local 13 and a member of the 388th Bomb Group 8th Army Air Force.



Ray ("White Cloud") had the pleasure of participating in the YMCA Indian Guides Program with his son, Rob ("Little Cloud"). Ray was also part of the charter tribe of the YMCA Indian Princesses with his daughter Tracy ("Little Flame"). He was blessed again to join the Indian Princesses with his granddaughters Shannon, Erin, Caitlin, Kerry and Molly.



Ray was predeceased by his son Stephen A. York. He is survived by his wife, UVee York (nee Yonker), his children Wendy York-Feirn (William), Sherri Smith (Edward), Robert C. York (Cheryl) and Tracy Gormley (Joseph), his daughter-in-law, Susan York, 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.



Relatives, friends, members of the Fire Service and all organizations of which he was a member are invited to his viewing Friday, March 20, 2015 7:00-9:00 PM and Saturday, March 21, 2015 9:30-10:30 AM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike (cor. Lynn Blvd.), Upper Darby, PA (610) 449-0300 and to his Funeral Service, Manoa Community Church, 153 N. Eagle Road, Havertown, PA at 11:00 AM. Interment Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill, PA.
