Regina "Gina" Cannon Mallare passed away on Monday, July 29, 2013. She led a quietly impactful life, caring for others while carrying herself with grace, humility, and dignity. Gina was born on August 18, 1938 to John and Eleanor Cannon in Albany, New York; the eldest of six children. Gina graduated from St. Peter's Hospital Nursing School in Albany. She married Dr. Melchor Mallare in 1959 and together they lived in Miami, Florida and Danville, Kentucky before settling in Danville, Virginia in 1963 where they raised their seven children.
Gina was an active community volunteer, and devoted much of her free time at the Sacred Heart Parish and School. She also continued to work occasionally as a nurse.
Gina always enjoyed the simple moments in life, which to her were the most emblematic of a life well lived. She loved a good book and an afternoon nap, the sound of the waves and the feeling of sand in her toes, the wagging tail and unwavering loyalty from a dog. She loved art and had an ear for good music- and she loved to dance. She had a penchant for sweets and loved a good cup of coffee. She loved witty banter and the quiet pause after a hard laugh with a friend. She loved spending time with her family and loved ones. But more than anything she loved loving others. Gina's greatest joys came from the care she gave, and the joy she witnessed coming from her children, grandchildren, family and friends.
Gina was preceded in death by her son, Michael Mallare. She is survived by her husband, Melchor Mallare , her children: daughter-in-law, Jennifer Mallare, Kathy Victor and husband Chuck, Alicia Neu and husband Mike, Missy Newton and husband John, Melchor "Chip" Mallare, Jr and wife Maria, Chris Mallare and wife Beth, and Jeff Mallare. She is also survived by her 14 grandchildren: Sarah and Meghan Mallare; Andrew, Nathan and Bryce Victor; Elizabeth and Rachel Neu; Jeffrey, Kate and Matthew Newton; Caroline Mallare; Cameron, Kayleigh and Morgan Mallare. She is also survived by her siblings Joanne Sheldon, Joyce Prichard, John Cannon, Tom Cannon and Judy Brown; numerous sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
