Father Walter J. Quinn, Jr., O.S.A., age 88, of Villanova, PA, passed away on January 15, 2019.
Born in Lansdowne, PA on August 8, 1930, he was the son of the late Walter J. and Anna Quinn (nee Haas).
Father was baptized in St. Charles Borromeo Church in Drexel Hill, PA on August 17, 1930.
He attended St. Charles Parish School and St. Andrew Parish School in Drexel Hill for his elementary education from 1936-1944 and was a 1948 graduate of West Catholic Boys High School in Philadelphia.
He attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1952.
He then served in the United States Army from 1952-1954 during the Korean War.
After the war, Father worked as a salesman for the firm that invented the coffee dispensing machine in PA, NJ, DE from 1954-1955.
Father entered the Augustinian Order and was received as a Novice on September 9, 1955.
After one year at Good Counsel Novitiate at New Hamburg, NY, he professed his first vows on September 10, 1956.
He then attended Villanova University for Philosophical Studies from 1956-1958.
From 1958-1962 he went to Augustinian College in Washington, DC, where he obtained a Master's Degree in Religious Education.
He also pursued Graduate Studies in International Law (Evening Classes) at Catholic University of America.
He professed solemn vows on September 10, 1959.
He was ordained to the Priesthood in 1961 at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC by Bishop Philip J. Hannan.
Father's first assignment was to St. John Sahagun Friary in Washington, DC from 1962-1963.
From 1963-1992, Father served in Parochial Ministry throughout the province as Associate Pastor in the following parishes: Our Mother of Consolation, Chestnut Hill from 1963-1968; St. Genevieve in Flourtown from 1968-1975; Immaculate Conception, Hoosick Falls, NY as Pastor from 1975-1977; St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Bronx, NY from 1977-1978 as Associate Pastor; St. Thomas of Villanova, Rosemont, PA from 1979-1982; Our Lady of Good Counsel, Staten Island, NY from 1982-1985 as Associate Pastor; St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Atlantic City, NJ from 1985-1990 as Associate Pastor; St. Augustine, Philadelphia as Pastor from 1990-1998 and Our Lady of Good Counsel, Staten Island, NY from 1998-1999 as Associate Pastor.
Beginning in 1999, Father was assigned to St. Thomas Monastery, Villanova, PA and began his full time work with Priests for Life, a National and International Pro-Life organization with headquarters in Staten Island, NY.
He traveled throughout the United States visiting Catholic, Protestant and Secular Grade School, High Schools, Colleges and Church groups, Chanceries, Parishes and news media promoting and defending all the Life Issues.
Father is survived by his brother, John Quinn, his sister, Mary Anne Olson and many nieces, nephews, cousins and his Augustinians brothers.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Saturday, January 19, 2019 9:30-10:30 AM in the Church of St. Thomas of Villanova on the campus of Villanova University, 800 E. Lancaster Avenue, Villanova, PA and to his Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM.
Interment to follow in the Augustinian plot at Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken, PA.
